What to Do With Unwanted Furniture

Practical ways to sell, donate, rehome or responsibly dispose of furniture when downsizing.

Back to resources

When downsizing, it’s common to find that you have more furniture than you have space for. Rather than moving everything and deciding later, consider your options early so you can reduce stress and potentially make some money from items you no longer need.

Sell Items That Have Value

Good-quality furniture in excellent condition can often be sold through online marketplaces, local buy-and-sell groups or second-hand furniture stores. Take clear photographs, provide accurate measurements and be realistic about the price.

If you’re working to a deadline, pricing competitively can help items sell faster.

Donate to a Good Cause

If your furniture is clean and in usable condition but isn’t worth selling, consider donating it to a local charity or community organisation. Some organisations may collect larger items from your home, making this a convenient option when you’re preparing for a move.

Give Items to Family or Friends

Furniture that has sentimental value may be appreciated by someone you know. Ask family members or friends if they would like anything before offering items for sale or disposal.

This can be a meaningful way to pass on furniture that has been part of your family for many years.

Repurpose or Upcycle

Before getting rid of an item, consider whether it could have a new purpose. A cabinet might become useful storage, while a smaller piece of furniture could work in another room or be refurbished for a new home.

Dispose of Damaged or Unusable Furniture Responsibly

Furniture that is broken, heavily damaged or unsafe may need to be disposed of. Check with your local council to find out about hard rubbish collections, resource recovery centres or other disposal services.

Avoid leaving unwanted furniture on the street unless it is part of an approved collection.

Don’t Leave It Until the Last Minute

Furniture can be difficult to move and dispose of, particularly larger items. Start making decisions early and allow enough time to sell, donate or arrange disposal.

Having a clear plan can make the final stages of downsizing much easier.

You don’t have to find a new home for every piece of furniture. Downsizing is about creating a home that suits your next chapter, with space for the things that are most useful and meaningful to you.
